Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta students had the opportunity to shine when the Captivate performing and creative arts program recently hosted its 10th Anniversary Showcase at Quaycentre, Sydney Olympic Park.
The show combined a spectacular musical ensemble of 165 students, backed up by the 1000-student primary choir and 190-student secondary choir singing songs such as One Dream, Come Back to the Sea, Keep your Lamps Trimmed and Burning and River Run Free.
This was complemented by a dance ensemble of 382 dancers who kept audiences enraptured. There was also a secondary drama ensemble of 90 students and a student ‘spoken word choir’ comprising 80 students from four primary schools.
One of the highlights of the performance was the use of puppetry and props to reflect the showcase’s storyline. The impact of the puppets was dramatic, guiding the audience through show’s theme of ‘creativity’: from the igniting of the creative spark, through to creative play, creative block, creative flow, and finally creative genius. The show’s finale was a stunning performance of Rihanna’s Diamonds in the Sky.
Captivate director Mark Hopkins said that for many students involved, it was their first major public performance.
“Others were consolidating many years of practice, rehearsal and performing, honing their skills for HSC practical examinations in the coming weeks or auditions for specialist post school arts study pathways in the coming months.
“Captivate is the program by which all students, regardless of prior experience or the location of their school, can access specialist learning in the arts.
“With a constant stream of research documenting evidence of the cognitive and social benefits of arts participation and learning, it is vital that such learning is part of each child’s education.”
St Andrew’s Primary, Marayong acting Principal Kim McDonald described the show as a rewarding experience for all those involved.
“Students have been rehearsing since February, both during recess and lunch breaks and also at formal off-site rehearsals with other students in the Diocese as well as during the school holidays,’’ Mrs McDonald said.
“This level of collaboration and creativity has provided opportunities for students to express themselves in a unique way. We are so proud of the students and thank them for their commitment, enthusiasm and persistence over such a long period of time.”

They discovered how life has changed over time and gained valuable insights into the significance of this important historical site. Students also put their observation skills to work by completing detailed sketches of Old Government House from the front of the building. Before heading home, we enjoyed a relaxing walk through the beautiful parklands surrounding the site.

On Tuesday, our school community celebrated the Feast of the Holy Trinity. Students began the day by joining Year 7 and 8 students from Delany College for a special Mass, where we gathered in prayer and reflected on the love, unity and relationship shared between God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Following Mass, classes participated in activities centred around the Holy Trinity. Students worked collaboratively to create individual pieces that will come together as a whole-school artwork, symbolising how we are all connected as one community through our faith.

Year 4 have been engaging in thoughtful discussions through the story Mad Magpie by Gregg Dreise. Students explored the choices made by Guluu and discussed how words and actions can have both positive and negative consequences for ourselves and others. They also reflected on the important message often found in Indigenous Australian stories and artwork β the importance of living in harmony with the land and with each other. To deepen their understanding, students worked individually and in pairs to create mind maps around the concept: βWords and actions have consequences.β It was wonderful to see their thoughtful ideas, creativity and connections to everyday life.

β‘ Year 6 have been powering up their learning in Science as they explored electricity and circuits! Students investigated how electrical energy flows through a circuit and experimented with different components to see what was needed to make a bulb light up or a buzzer sound. Through hands-on learning, students worked collaboratively to build circuits, test predictions and solve problems like real scientists. It was fantastic to see their curiosity, teamwork and excitement during the investigations! π

πββοΈπββοΈ Congratulations to our 9 students who represented our school at the Cross Country Zone Carnival, competing against students from schools across the diocese! All students showed determination, resilience and excellent sportsmanship throughout the day. Year 4 have been busy exploring measurement in Maths! π Students have been developing their measuring skills by using rulers, measuring tapes and trundle wheels to measure a variety of objects and distances around the classroom and school grounds. Through these hands-on activities, students are learning how to accurately measure and compare lengths using different tools and units. Students worked together to act out important scenes, using facial expressions, body language and teamwork to bring the story to life.
