Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta students had the opportunity to shine when the Captivate performing and creative arts program recently hosted its 10th Anniversary Showcase at Quaycentre, Sydney Olympic Park.
The show combined a spectacular musical ensemble of 165 students, backed up by the 1000-student primary choir and 190-student secondary choir singing songs such as One Dream, Come Back to the Sea, Keep your Lamps Trimmed and Burning and River Run Free.
This was complemented by a dance ensemble of 382 dancers who kept audiences enraptured. There was also a secondary drama ensemble of 90 students and a student ‘spoken word choir’ comprising 80 students from four primary schools.
One of the highlights of the performance was the use of puppetry and props to reflect the showcase’s storyline. The impact of the puppets was dramatic, guiding the audience through show’s theme of ‘creativity’: from the igniting of the creative spark, through to creative play, creative block, creative flow, and finally creative genius. The show’s finale was a stunning performance of Rihanna’s Diamonds in the Sky.
Captivate director Mark Hopkins said that for many students involved, it was their first major public performance.
“Others were consolidating many years of practice, rehearsal and performing, honing their skills for HSC practical examinations in the coming weeks or auditions for specialist post school arts study pathways in the coming months.
“Captivate is the program by which all students, regardless of prior experience or the location of their school, can access specialist learning in the arts.
“With a constant stream of research documenting evidence of the cognitive and social benefits of arts participation and learning, it is vital that such learning is part of each child’s education.”
St Andrew’s Primary, Marayong acting Principal Kim McDonald described the show as a rewarding experience for all those involved.
“Students have been rehearsing since February, both during recess and lunch breaks and also at formal off-site rehearsals with other students in the Diocese as well as during the school holidays,’’ Mrs McDonald said.
“This level of collaboration and creativity has provided opportunities for students to express themselves in a unique way. We are so proud of the students and thank them for their commitment, enthusiasm and persistence over such a long period of time.”

Guided by the knowledgeable zoo educators, students participated in engaging, hands-on activities while discovering real-world examples of wildlife conservation. They learned how animals are perfectly suited to their environments and, most importantly, explored the ways we can all help protect the habitats these amazing creatures call home. It was a fun-filled day of discovery, learning and adventure that inspired our students to become future caretakers of our natural world!

Let there be light! After a couple of weeks of technical issues students had the opportunity to take their theoretical understanding of electrical circuits into their physical hands. Students created series and parallel circuits, conducting power from a battery pack, through wires and lighting a small globe. It was imperative that the circuit be closed for electricity to flow through. Lots of fun was had by all! Well done Year 6!

This week, Year 2 explored the beautiful story The Boy and the Elephant. As we reflected on how the elephant helped the boy find courage, students thought about what makes them feel brave. They each chose and created an animal that represents bravery, confidence, and strength to them. ππ¦π¦ We loved hearing the thoughtful reasons behind each student's choice and seeing their creativity shine through their artwork. What a wonderful reminder that courage can come in many different forms!

In preparation for the upcoming Voice of Youth presentations, students engaged in a public speaking workshop. Year 6 were challenged to speak confidently using persuasive language on a topic of their choosing. They learnt the importance of a 3 word motto for your audience to remember and carry through. ππ What an incredible celebration of culture and community! Today, our students enjoyed a wonderful Multicultural Day alongside our friends from Delany. The day began with a meaningful Smoking Ceremony, acknowledging the Traditional Custodians of the land and setting the tone for a day of respect, learning and celebration. Students experienced a vibrant showcase of cultures through spectacular performances, delicious food stalls from around the world, and opportunities to learn about the rich diversity that makes our communities so special. A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the day such a success. During Literacy, students focused on developing their handwriting skills and reading comprehension. They carefully practised correct letter formation, size and spacing, while also applying their comprehension strategies to understand and respond to texts. Students worked collaboratively in groups to research the four Gospels and deepen their understanding of the New Testament. Through their investigations, they discovered that Matthew, Mark and Luke are known as the Synoptic Gospels because they share many similarities in their accounts of Jesus' life and teachings. They also learned that John's Gospel has a more philosophical and reflective style, focusing on the deeper meaning of Jesus' identity and message. βπ

Year 4 have been learning about National Sorry Day and National Reconciliation Week, exploring the importance of truth-telling, respect and building positive relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians. As part of their learning, students worked together to create a Path to Reconciliation. Along the pathway, they shared thoughtful words, promises and actions that can help create a more respectful and inclusive future for all. π

What is the probability of receiving a red M&M in a sample size of 10? Our maths lesson took an unexpected sweet turn. We used M&Ms to determine the probability of events occurring. Students recorded the data they collected from their bowl of M&Ms in fractions, decimals and percentages form and then placed the expected probability of each M&M colour on the probability scale. The highlight? Students being allowed to eat their M&Ms at the end of the lesson. Yum!
